What Causes Acne?

Acne outbreak is a very distressing skin condition which can affect people of almost all genres. It not only lowers one’s confidence and self-esteem but can also leave unsightly and permanent acne scars on face. Various companies and brands compete with each other and come up with numerous acne care products. These do help eliminate acne temporarily, but do not provide any permanent solution. It is very important to know the possible causes of acne to eliminate the same.

Here is a list of possible reasons for occurrence of acne.

Oily Skin

Those with oily skin stand at the risk of developing acne as their skin produces sebum oil in excess. Production of sebum is very essential to keep skin nourished and hydrated. But when sebum combines with dead skin cells, it tends to get trapped within the pores of the skin which in turn leads to acne. Those with oily skin must wash their face using a suitable cleanser at least two or three times a day to prevent acne. Also ensure that you wash your face after sweating excessively to keep acne away.

Bacteria

Excessive production of sebum along with presence of bacteria can initiate acne outbreaks. This can also occur as a result of excessive exposure of skin to various pollutants and dirt. Acne due to bacteria can result in severe conditions like cysts and nodules on skin. Keeping skin clean is the only solution to keep such issues at bay. Regular use of a good quality cleanser helps keep acne problems away. You can also exfoliate your skin and take steam on your face once a week or so to reduce acne due to bacteria.

Hormonal Changes

Appearance of acne can be associated with unusual hormonal activities. Increase in number of androgen hormones during puberty is known to initiate acne. Acne problems in teenagers can hence be attributed to hormonal activities. Certain hormonal adjustments in pregnant women can also be associated with acne eruptions during pregnancy. This kind of acne is temporary and disappears with time.

Diet

An array of studies and researches has concluded that foods can have a major influence on the skin. Consumption of foods rich in unhealthy trans fats and saturated fats can trigger acne. Foods rich in sugars and caffeine containing beverages can also worsen or set off similar skin conditions. Include more of fruits, vegetables and wholegrain foods to your diet for healthy skin. Also make certain that you drink plenty of water, fruits and vegetable juices throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and to flush out all acne causing microbes out of your system.

Stress

Excessive stress, lack of sleep and rest can also cause acne problems. The adrenal glands of those suffering from stress and tensions tend to produce cortisol in excess. Increased production of cortisol can boost the production of sebum oil from the sebaceous glands. This in turn promotes acne and other skin problems. In order to cope with acne due to stress and tensions, you can participate in various relaxing activities like yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises.
